A Washington state man and woman are accused of leaving their three young children in a filthy house without food have been arrested, police say.
The parents were tracked down by investigators Tuesday. It is unknown how long the children had been unattended when police removed them Saturday.
The 33-year-old adults were booked into jail for investigation of felony criminal mistreatment and abandonment of a dependent person.
The seven-year-old girl, three-year-old boy and an 11-month old boy were found surrounded by feces and garbage, Lake Stevens police Cmdr. Dennis Taylor said. The children were taken to the hospital.
The baby was found to have a core temperature of 94 degrees and was treated for hypothermia and dehydration. All of the children were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Police were forced to wear respirators and plastic boots because of the amount of human and animal waste in the house. Detective Dean Thomas told the Daily Herald of Everett that officers persuaded the little to let them in.
“There was no heat. It was 40-something degrees in the house,” Taylor said. There was a space heater left on in one room. The house had running water and power, but there was also extensive water damage.
