Conn. woman left severely ill by insect bites on school trip to China wins $41.7M jury verdict

Associated Press

A woman who sued her prestigious Connecticut boarding school after she became severely ill on a school trip to China has been awarded $41.7 million.

The federal jury in Bridgeport reached the verdict Wednesday in favor of Cara Munn and against The Hotchkiss School.

Attorneys for Munn and a court clerk confirmed the award. Messages left for an attorney for Hotchkiss and a school spokeswoman weren't immediately returned.

Attorneys for Munn, now 20, say she was 15 when she went on a school trip to China and suffered insect bites that led to encephalitis. They say she can't talk and suffered brain damage.

Munn's attorneys say the school failed to take precautions and notify her parents promptly of the extent of her illness.
