Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a man who went missing in the waters south of San Francisco after he headed into the surf for a quick swim.

Officer Mark Leahey says friends of the 22-year-old man called for help Sunday afternoon after he disappeared following a game of football on Roosevelt Beach near Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and a rescue boat crew to join crews from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and Pillar Point Harbormaster.

Leahey says crews conducted an extensive search, but found no signs of the man.

He says the search was called off at 7:50pm Sunday. The man's identity has not been released, pending notification of his family.
