A fugitive on the run for more than 18 years after allegedly murdering a Pennsylvania man has been extradited to the U.S. following his arrest in the Dominican Republic.
Francisco G. Miranda, 50, was caught in the Dominican Republic in November after evading authorities for nearly two decades, The Morning Call Newspaper reported. Miranda is the prime suspect in the 1994 murder of 30-year-old Jorge Antonio Velazquez Jr., of Bethlehem, Pa., who police say was stabbed to death after a fight following a game of dominoes, according to the newspaper.
Miranda was reportedly found living with his mother in the Dominican Republic. He was arrested in November in the southeastern city of La Romana, the newspaper reported. The extradition process was finally completed by U.S. Marshals on Friday, and Miranda is now sitting in the Northampton County Prison.
For years, the search for Miranda proved fruitless for investigators. But in 2000, authorities reopened the probe as a cold case that focused on the Dominican Republic, according to the newspaper. In 2008, they received a tip that Miranda was spotted in the southeastern part of the country.
