An elderly North Carolina man and woman who don't speak the same language have found a language they both understand: the language of love.
On Saturday, the two will say "I do."
The romance of Larry Bushnell, 85, and Columba Rosaly, 97, began when the widow and widower met at the Sharon Village retirement community, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Bushnell, who grew up on a Wisconsin farm, and Rosaly, who was raised in Ecuador, have spent much of their courtship communicating through Spanish instructor Iris Newton.
"I got a call from Columba four months ago," Newton told the newspaper, "and she said 'I need you. I have a boyfriend, and he does not speak Spanish.' And I said: 'If he doesn't speak Spanish, how do you know you're dating?' "
The answer, according to Newton, was simple: "He kissed her on the cheek one day," she told the newspaper.
The couple's love quickly blossomed after Bushnell sent notes to Rosaly in the lunch room of the Charlotte retirement center, using a website to translate questions into Spanish, according to the newspaper.
"I've never felt so happy," Rosaly told the newspaper, with Newton translating.
Bushnell and Rosaly will wed at a ceremony Saturday at the City Tavern in Ballantyne. The bride-to-be hopes for a honeymoon, according to the newspaper.
