Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Police say one person has died and two others survived the crash of a small plane in a field near a North Texas airport.

Denton police Officer Ryan Grelle says searchers located the wreckage shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday, northwest of Denton Municipal Airport.

Controllers lost contact with the Cessna 172, bound for Denton, around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday and contacted police.

Grelle says one survivor, walking to get help, was spotted by an officer seeking the plane. Police say the student pilot suffered head and leg injuries.

Searchers later found the wreckage, with one person dead and another hurt.

The two survivors have been transported to hospitals. No details were available on their conditions.

Police are trying to determine where the flight originated.

The area had fog early Tuesday.
