Norwegian Cruise Line to close private island for renovations

Earlier this year Norwegian Cruise Line revealed extensive plans to refurbish its private island, Great Stirrup Cay, as part of its larger $400 million Norwegian Edge investment program.
According to Cruise Critic, the Bahamian island will be closed for nearly two months from Aug. 25 to Oct. 20 while crews make a plethora of upgrades. The temporary closure is expected to impact short sailings aboard the Norwegian Sky, which will cruise to Nassau and Grand Bahama for the time being.
Enhancement efforts on the 250-acre island will include new landscaping, new pathways and a new boardwalk.
A pair of zip lines will be added along with a sports complex where visitors will be able to play basketball and volleyball.

The improvements will also include the introduction of new dining options, including an a la carte LandShark Bar & Grill. A Lagoon Retreat space complete with a four-treatment-room spa, an oceanview restaurant and 22 rented villas will be made available for cruise passengers staying in the Haven and Suites.
The island will be ready to welcome guests by January 2017. However refurbishment efforts are expected to continue through next summer.
It's been nearly four decades since Norwegian became the first cruise line to purchase a private island.
