Have you ever wondered what it feels like to die?
A new attraction in Shanghai seeks to answer one of life’s most pressing questions.
Xinglai, which translated to “awaken” in English, is a virtual reality experience opening this week. Participants are given the opportunity to be killed off, cremated and then resurrected by birth through a latex womb, reports Reuters.
The game begins with a group of people asked to discuss a life and scenario. Participants are asked if they would sacrifice or their own life or who among the group they sentence to “die.”
The individual selected for death must climb inside a giant fake cremation device, with 360-degree screens projected intense flames.
Once cremation is complete, the person enters the rebirth phase and must climb on their hands and knees through a serene, white latex opening.
Lu Si Wei got to experience a sneak preview of the attraction.
“The “death simulator” is really interesting. It at least gives you the chance to calm down, and give in to some deeper thoughts and think about some of life’s problems,” Wei told Reuters.
“When you walk through that door, you will experience some changes in your mentality, and it will be different from what it was before you entered. I think this is really great, and very worthwhile.”
Before “dying,” people may write down their final reflections and last words. These may be taken home as a souvenir—or shred the macabre evidence.
The virtual cremation experience opens this week. Tickets are $68.
