A Carnival Cruise Line ship hosting a Pittsburgh sports legends party rescued 16 migrants stranded in the Gulf of Mexico Saturday.
Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz said the Carnival Sensation found the 15 men and one woman about 50 miles north of Cuba and brought them aboard.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rio said they would be turned over to Mexican immigration officials at the ship’s next stop, Cozumel.
Steelers defensive lineman James Harrison took photos of the rescue mission and posted them on Instagram. One picture was captioned: “We just stopped for this board with 16 people in the middle of the ocean. Waiting for coast guard now.”
The cruise started on Thursday in Miami and will travel to Key West in addition to Cozumel on its four-day trip.
Other Pittsburgh sports legends on the boat were: Rocky Bleier, Antonio Brown, Demontii Dawso, Donnie Shell, former Pirates catcher Manny Sanguillen and ex-Penguins Ken Wregget, Bryan Troittier and Francis Leroux.
