Pelosi: Clinton presidency would be distinct from Obama's

House Minority leader says Hillary Clinton's world view is much more optimistic than Donald Trump's

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: The president is expected to tell the American people about the Hillary Clinton he knows.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is here to go ON THE RECORD.

Good evening, Leader.

NANCY PELOSI, HOUSE MINORITY LEADER: Good evening.

VAN SUSTEREN: OK. You have said that we shouldn't vote for a candidate simply because she is a woman.

PELOSI: Right.

VAN SUSTEREN: But there is a certain amount of excitement, is there not, that Secretary Clinton will be the first woman to head the presidential ticket once she formally accepts?

PELOSI: Very exciting. I think that she will be chosen because she is the best, the best person to be president of the United States. And that's why people should vote for her. The fact that she is a woman is exciting beyond words. It's really thrilling.

VAN SUSTEREN: Is she going to be a third term of President Obama, or is she different from President Obama policies?

PELOSI: Well, they have shared values about an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few, about respecting the judgment of women about the size and timing of their families. That climate change is real and not a Chinese hoax. That we should have comprehensive immigration reform. That we should have common sense gun safety laws and arrests.

But she will bring her own priorities, investment in infrastructure in a bigger way, I think, to the presidency. But she will tell us herself what her priorities will be. But she is a different person. She is a person who has a lifetime dedication to public service.

VAN SUSTEREN: How does she sort of get that? One of the hurdles that she does have is that the polls show that her trustworthiness is not in a good number. That a lot of people don't trust her.

How does she gain the trust of the American people?

PELOSI: Well, neither of their numbers are that good.

VAN SUSTEREN: Both are lousy. Both are lousy.

PELOSI: But that's what campaigns are all about. And in an election you decide who is going to hold the seat. Who is going to win the election? But it's also a discussion of your vision for the future.

And her vision for the future, I think, will be a much more positive, bright one for America than her opponents. And in the course of engaging with the public, showing what her presidency means in their lives.

Again, being a woman president doesn't mean anything except what it means in the lives of the American people.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, the DNC took a beating this week with revelation of those emails. It certainly looked that Senator Bernie Sanders had a legitimate beef that the DNC had not been impartial and fair throughout the election.

What do you say to Senator Bernie Sanders' supporters? Because a lot of them here are fine inside the arena. Outside, they're not.

PELOSI: Well, I think that they are not a monolith. And I think that Senator Sanders' presentation was that last night? It seems like a long time ago.

Monday.

VAN SUSTEREN: Monday ... Monday.

PELOSI: He did a great deal to bring people together. It's hard to bring your people over just like that. And I think it will take some time. But, overwhelmingly, I believe his supporters understand why they have differences between Bernie and --

VAN SUSTEREN: Whoa, I mean, isn't it -- I mean, don't you sort of understand at least Vice President Biden does the anger that Bernie Sanders supporters, because those emails did, I mean, did look very -- it look like the fix was in some way.

PELOSI: Well, I understand about emails. I don't think it would have made the difference in the election. I don't think the DNC or the RNC or any NC should have any role in the primary. And so I sympathize with the concerns that they have. Debbie -- Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz has stepped down and go forward now.

I don't think that even Bernie Sanders is saying, but for those emails, he would be the nominee for president.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, everyone is talking about President Obama, Vice President Biden speaking tonight. But we're going to, on a national stage meet Senator Tim Kaine tonight, aren't we?

PELOSI: Very exciting.

VAN SUSTEREN: What do you think is going to surprise the American people about him.

PELOSI: Well, before you go into that, you said President Obama and Vice President Biden, nominee Tim Kaine.

We also heard from Senate Minority -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid. Make this kind of a farewell to the convention. It was very well-received and moving. And I want to recognize that my view of Tim Kaine, the word I used for him is angelic. He is a beautiful, lovely person. Values-based in his public service. Courageous in going forth with what he believes in. And a good -- a life of commitment to helping people.

VAN SUSTEREN: I don't envy any of them tonight having to speak because there is a lot of competition up there in terms of, you know, a lot of attention on all of them.

PELOSI: Well, right now we have Gavin Newsom, lieutenant governor of California.

(CROSSTALK)

VAN SUSTEREN: Lieutenant Governor from California. That's your home state.

PELOSI: Yes, indeed.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, last night, President Bill Clinton spoke.

Your thoughts?

PELOSI: Beautiful. It was beautiful. At typical, he has his own rate of time of unfolding the story, but at the end of the day, a very powerful speech in support of Hillary Clinton.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. 30 seconds left.

What do you want to hear most from Secretary Clinton on Thursday? What's the one key thing she has to zero in on?

PELOSI: Well, the difference between Democrats and Republicans, trickle down economics that benefits the very few or an economic -- an economy that works for everyone.

I think that is really the message that has to be delivered. How she chooses to do that, by story telling, by her own priorities will remains to be seen. But she is the nominee for President of the United States, the first woman ever. She will have her own original presentation to make and I'm sure it will be magnificent.

VAN SUSTEREN: Leader Pelosi, thank you very much for joining us. Don't be a stranger to Fox News.
