Vote of No Confidence
Americans do not have a lot of confidence in the legislative branch.
A Gallup poll finds Congress ranks dead last out of 16 institutions -- including television news, organized labor and big business. Only 11 percent of respondents say they have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress -- down from 17 percent in 2009 and the previous low for Congress, 12 percent in 2008.
Mr. Popular
Someone who is up in the polls: Former President Bill Clinton.
Gallup reports he is currently better-liked than President Obama -- 61 percent to 52. This is the first time in Gallup polling that Mr. Clinton's favorable rating exceeds President Obama's.
Is this the reason the former president has been getting more face time at campaign and administration events in recent weeks? You decide.
Something to Talk About
Another day, another set of leaked e-mails from the liberal listserv "journolist."
The Daily Caller reports Sarah Palin was the focus of interest in the hours after she was announced as John McCain's running mate.
Jeffrey Toobin of The New Yorker and CNN wrote, "What a joke. I always thought that some part of McCain doesn't want to be president, and this choice proves my point."
Ryan Avent, who at the time was blogging for The Economist and is now an editor there, wrote, "I really don't think the experience argument needs to be made by the Dems. Instead, hammer away at the fact that she has terrible positions on things like choice."
Joe Klein of Time Magazine e-mailed that he had written a column using some of the jabs on the site, saying, "Here's my attempt to incorporate that accumulated wisdom of this august listserv community."
Journolist founder Ezra Klein, who currently blogs for the Washington Post, had a different take -- "I see no reason to attack Palin. I think you accurately describe Palin and attack McCain."
Sunshine Getaway
The first family is taking the first lady's advice. The Obamas are planning a weekend trip next month to Florida's Gulf Coast.
We told you last week during Mrs. Obama's visit to the area she encouraged Americans to vacation along the Gulf Coast and days later went on a mini-vacation with her family to Maine.
