Once Again The Times Has My Name in a Headline

Once again, The New York Times has my name in a headline. That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."

A few weeks ago, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof said I fabricated the Christmas controversy, the standard far left position and that I was Mullah Omar for doing so. That, of course, is absurd blather.

But Kristof's larger point was that I ignored the atrocities in Darfur to deal with trivial matters like Christmas. In my newspaper column this week, available right now on billoreilly.com, I pointed out that while Darfur is important, the Times completely ignored the gross human rights violation of a little Vermont girl and other abused American kids. Come on, child rapist gets 60 days, and the Times doesn't mention it?

Well, today Mr. Kristof posted another column entitled "Helping Bill O'Reilly" where he asked his readers to send money so I can travel to Africa. This, of course, is simply a gimmick, a ploy to use my name to bring attention to Kristof's passion, alleviating the suffering in Darfur. And you know what? I don't mind that he's using me in this. Any improvement in that hellish region is a worthy goal.

But Kristof is making a big mistake in his analysis. He continues to lay the Darfur situation at America's doorstep when the United Nations is where his anger should be directed. Perhaps Kristof hasn't noticed, but the USA is up to its neck fighting terrorists, people who want to kill Nicholas Kristof and his family. It's true that Muslims who run the Sudan are the villains of Darfur but Americans simply cannot take on that country when we have Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and al Qaeda to deal with.

Of course, that great African, Kofi Annan, could make Darfur a huge issue at the UN but has chosen not to do so.

Nicholas Kristof's heart is in the right place but he is a fuzzy thinker. He couldn't care less whether I travel to Darfur. He just wants Americans to rally to the cause. But we're now living in a very dangerous time. Before 9/11, the suffering in Darfur might have commanded more attention. But today America is preoccupied with the war on terror. Again, the UN sitting the terror war out and has plenty of time to help in Darfur.

That's where Kristof should be directing his ire and also at his own newspaper which continues to ignore the child predator situation here in the USA. Finally, we invited Mr. Kristof on THE FACTOR to make his case. So far, he has been too busy. And that's "The Memo."

The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

My colleague John Gibson is a very famous guy, and here's proof. Some nut has made a sugar cookie that looks like Gibson and another nut bid more than $300 on eBay and bought it.

Gibson is thrilled, but it gets worse. There's a Pop Tart that allegedly looks like me, but as you can see, it looks like Neil Cavuto. It's also for sale. The smart cookies know a rip-off when they see one. Might be ridiculous..
