Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly. Thanks for watching us tonight.
President Bush in a bit of trouble. That's the subject of this evening's Talking Points Memo. If I were Karl Rove, the chief presidential adviser, I would tell Mr. Bush to adopt a Nike strategy on Iraq, "Just do it." There's no question the Bush administration believes Saddam is a danger to America. So remove him and take what comes. Every week that the uncertainty over Iraq continues the economy weakens, because few invest when the world is to turbulent.
Every week of doubts creates more opportunity for Bush's enemies and they are formidable, to create difficulties for him. Just yesterday a new poll showed support for American action against Iraq to be slipping. So. predictably today, many Democrats, including Bill Clinton, came out gunning for the president. The sniping will only get worse if the Saddam situation is allowed to fester.
Now, if I believe the United Nations was a fair body that would examine the evidence against Iraq without prejudice, I would counsel Mr. Bush to work closely with the U.N., but I don't believe that. I'm convinced many of the United Nations, including France and Germany, dislike Mr. Bush in American power more than they dislike Saddam Hussein. Therefore, even though there is no question that Saddam Hussein's violated a number of U.N. resolutions, many of that organization don't want Saddam removed from power for business reasons and anti-U.S. reasons.
So, next Tuesday evening, President Bush should state his strongest case to remove Saddam, and then go ahead and remove him. Whoever's on board is on board. The others can watch and whine. I fully understand in the short run, Mr. Bush will be putting the United States into an unpopular position. But America's already unpopular in many quarters and not removing Saddam will not improve our image.
Those who hate the U.S. will hate us no matter what we do. Those who oppose Mr. Bush inside the USA, will still oppose him, war or no war. But when America wins the fight, France and the others will shut up. And try to gain economically from the situation. So, let's get it over with. Saddam is a villain and threat to the world. Playing PR games is not going to help George W. Bush, only decisive action will. Clear-thinking Americans will rally around the president if he states his case clearly and we heavily outnumber.
That's The Memo .
The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day
Time now for "The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day..."
That American Idol TV program is once again a mega hit for Fox. It even hurt us in the ratings a couple of nights ago, and Paula Abdul's going to hear about that from me.
Now I've tried to analyze just why the show is so successful, but I can't pinpoint it. Most of the talent is ordinary. The British guy is a scold, but, hey, Don Rickles has been around forever. And what else is there?
So, if you can figure this out, please let me know because I can't, and, for an analyst, that is ridiculous.
