Amazon announced the Kindle Paperwhite display, its newest e reader that sports a backlit display. In addition to having 25 percent more contrast, and a resolution of 212 pixels per inch, the Paperwhite's screen glows in the dark, much like Barnes & Noble's Nook Glowlight.

The Paperwhite has a light guide, a thin fiber optic cable, on top of the display. Light travels down the cable, and then it releases just the right amoutn of lighting across the display.

The device will cost $119, and ship in October. A 3G version costs $179.
