Man Arrested in Attempted New Mexico Elementary School Kidnapping

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Alamogordo authorities say a man has been arrested in connection with an attempted kidnapping at an elementary school.

Timothy McKearney was taken into custody Friday in Tularosa after the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety issued an arrest warrant for him.

Authorities obtained the warrant after a man in a pickup truck approached a student outside Sierra Elementary School on Thursday.

They say McKearney was a registered sex offender in Vermont. Alamogordo authorities are working with state police to determine whether McKearney had to register as a sex offender when he moved to New Mexico.

It was unclear Friday whether McKearney had hired a lawyer.
