DNC Backs House Voting Rights for D.C.

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The Democratic National Committee on Saturday gave unanimous support to the District of Columbia's effort for a full seat in the House of Representatives.

"We're very excited," said the DNC resolution's author, Donna Brazile. "This is the beginning of a 50-state campaign."

The campaign will begin by encouraging each presidential candidate to embrace the idea and also take the grass-roots effort to early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is gearing up for his part in the national campaign and local activists are planning to lobby and protest on Feb. 15 and again in April in order to get Capitol Hill's attention.

The District has fought for decades for a voting seat in Congress. Currently, Del. Elanor Holmes Norton can only vote in committees and on amendments to legislation.

Legislators are considering a new plan introduced last month that would give a full seat to the heavily Democratic District and add another seat for Republican Utah.
