Chrome and Fins Car Stamps Play to Nostalgia for '50s Classics

Published January 13, 2015

Coming this fall to a post office near you — nostalgia for the fancy chrome and fins cars of the 1950s.

The Postal Service offered a sneak peek Friday at a car show in Carlisle, Pa., at the set of five stamps that will warm the hearts of millions who wanted these lovely vehicles but couldn't afford them.

The 42-cent stamps go on sale Oct. 3 and feature paintings of a '57 Chrysler 300C, '57 Lincoln Premiere, '57 Pontiac Safari, '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk and a '59 Cadillac Eldorado.

The price of sending a first-class letter goes up a penny to 42 cents May 12.

The illustrations were modeled after cars still on the road today.

It's the second set of classic car stamps. The first, in 2005, depicted a '52 Nash Healey, '53 Chevrolet Corvette, '53 Studebaker Starliner, '54 Kaiser Darrin and a '55 Ford Thunderbird.
