A Los Angeles surgeon has been ordered to pay a Maryland couple $800,600 in a malpractice lawsuit that claimed he missed a tumor and then tried to cover up his mistake.
Dr. Hrayr Shahinian lost the suit this week in Los Angeles but plans to appeal.
George Ralli and his wife sued Shahinian after a 2006 operation failed to remove a tumor. It was later removed in Maryland but Ralli lost his hearing.
Shahinian, who practices a type of minimally invasive brain surgery, acknowledged that he missed the tumor but denied altering a pathology report to conceal the error.
Last year, Shahinian won $4.7 million in a lawsuit that claimed he was improperly stripped of his operating rights at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The hospital plans to appeal.
