The youngest victim to ever be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the U.K., is now in remission after coming to the U.S. to receive a ground-breaking new type of treatment, the Daily Mail Reported.
When Ruddi Waterworth-Jones was diagnosed with prostate cancer a little over a year ago, he was only seven months old. His condition was potentially fatal.
Surgeons in Britain removed his prostate and bladder, but there was a chance his cancer could come back and was still a threat to his life.
Ruddi’s mother, Ali Waterworth, brought her infant son to America to have a cutting-edge cancer treatment known as proton therapy. Ruddi, now 18 months old, is the youngest child in the world to receive this treatment, pioneered at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute.
Proton therapy is a procedure that fires a beam of protons directly at tumors so that a highly concentrated amount of radiation can infiltrate the tumor without damaging the healthy tissue surrounding it.
Currently, Ruddi’s doctors in Florida are confident that he has no remaining cancer cells, and he is in remission after spending two months at the institute.
"There were times when we thought we might never be able to do this, so it's a big thing," Waterworth told the newspaper.
So what does the the future for Ruddi?
"I want him to have the best in life — from the best pair of socks to the best everything," Waterworth said.
