A 29-year-old central Illinois alderman is dead after having surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder says Nathan Turner died Sunday at an area hospital. The mayor says Turner had surgery a few days earlier.

Turner was sworn in to office in May 2009 after winning election earlier last year. It was his first term in public office.

Snyder called Turner bright and personable and says he cared about serving the public.

Turner worked as a project manager for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria. Funeral arrangements are pending.
