Israel's national rescue service says two children are being treated for serious injuries after accidentally entering a minefield in the Golan Heights.

Spokesman Yerucham Mendola says an 11-year-old boy sustained severe leg wounds and his 12-year-old sister had shrapnel wounds to the face. The two were injured while hiking with their family Saturday.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war. There are still a few minefields in the area which are fenced off with barbed wire. Reports of people being injured after straying into the zones are rare.

The Israeli military said the minefield was clearly marked with warning signs.
