A Massachusetts teenager pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder after investigators accused him of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend before trying to commit suicide by shooting and stabbing himself.

The Middlesex district attorney's office says Robert Gulla of Shirley was arraigned Monday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester in the death of Fitchburg State College freshman Allison Myrick.

The 19-year-old Gulla was also charged with violation of a restraining order in connection with Saturday night's killing of 19-year-old Myrick of Groton.

Police responding to a report of two people wounded at a Morin Street home pronounced Myrick dead at the scene. Gulla was flown to hospital for treatment.

Myrick's parents said in a statement that their "intelligent, creative, funny, compassionate, beautiful" daughter was in an abusive relationship.
