A Florida family is in a protracted fight with the city of Hollywood over their right to keep chickens as pets.

Steve and Renee Kohn say the fowl aren't any different than cats and dogs, because they aren't raising the birds to eat them.

The two only wanted one chicken for their 10-year-old son, but the hatchery made them take at least six.

When they ordered six, the hatchery delivered 17, saying it would help "keep them warm." The Kohns were able to give away eight, leaving them with nine beloved birds.

A Broward County judge has upheld the city magistrate's ruling the chickens must go.

The family plans an appeal, saying their children have grown attached to the animals.
