OXFORD, Conn. – Connecticut officials say a single-engine plane has crashed near the Waterbury-Oxford Airport, killing the pilot and leaving hundreds of residents without power.
The pilot was pulled from the wreckage by emergency workers and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead late Wednesday.
Connecticut Light and Power Inc. spokesman Mitch Gross told The Associated Press that a power line and a tower leading to a nearby substation were damaged in the incident, and it was not immediately clear whether the plane hit the transmission facilities before the crash.
About 5,800 customers were without power immediately after the crash, but utility workers had restored service to all but 300.
The plane did not slam into the substation, but debris was scattered around it. The airport's operations office says it is not affected.
The pilot's identity was not immediately released.
