The University of Michigan has named Domino's CEO David Brandon as its new athletic director.

The university said in a statement Tuesday that Brandon will have a 5-year contract.

School president Mary Sue Coleman said the 57-year-old Brandon is the "ideal candidate" and will carry on the university's "tradition of excellence."

Coleman led the search for a new AD after Bill Martin said last year he would retire in September. Martin will serve as a special adviser to Coleman until his retirement.

Brandon has been chairman and chief executive of Ann Arbor-based Domino's Pizza Inc. since March 1999. He graduated from Michigan in 1974, where he played football for the late coach Bo Schembechler.

Brandon won a seat in 1998 on the University of Michigan's Board of Regents.
