Los Angeles police say a Gardena city bus careened into power poles and sheared off a fire hydrant after its driver suffered a heart attack.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesman Richard French says four passengers were unharmed in the crash early Wednesday morning in the Harbor Gateway area.

He says 57-year-old Lynne Marie Monson was driving northbound in the narrow strip of city land south of downtown Los Angeles when she collapsed.

The bus went out of control, hitting parked cars and two power poles, snapping one in half. It also sheared off a light pole and a hydrant that sent up a geyser of water.

The bus crossed a street median and wound up in southbound lanes.
