A Vermont State Police trooper is recovering from minor injuries suffered when he hit a horse with his cruiser in Bennington.

Bennington police say Trooper William Deveneau suffered bumps and bruises when he hit the 1,200 pound horse, which was standing in the road on Monday morning.

Bennington Police Sgt. Camillo Grande says Deveneau euthanized the horse after the crash with his service weapon.

The Bennington Banner says the electric fence that had contained the horse was down and a gate was partially open.

Grande says the cruiser received extensive damage. He says the partition that separates the front and rear seats in the vehicle probably saved Deveneau's life.
