A police officer says a bomb has exploded in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, injuring three people.

Hakim Khan says the bomb was detonated by remote control early Thursday morning and was apparently targeting a local police officer, Riaz Ulislam, who was passing by in his vehicle.

Khan says the blast damaged Ulislam's vehicle and injured the police officer, his driver and a child who was passing by. The attack took place near a private school in a residential area of Peshawar.

The area in and around Peshawar has experienced a wave of attacks in recent weeks in apparent retaliation for a major anti-Taliban offensive in the South Waziristan tribal area.
