Authorities say one person has been found dead after an incident at an Alabama coal mine.

They report at least three other people have been taken to a hospital.

A mine official says two inspectors went into the mine around 10 p.m. last night and failed to report back. He says miners on a rescue mission to find them were overcome at a point far from the mine's opening.

He says one of the inspectors was found dead and the other was overcome by exhaustion. The other two miners suffered heat exhaustion.

The mine official says the problem was "not an explosion" and "not a cave-in." He says the inspectors and rescue teams were in a warm part of the mine, where fans circulate air.

Federal and state mine safety officials are investigating. The Brookwood mine is located about 40 miles southwest of Birmingham.
