A man who fired gunshots at police after a home invasion robbery at an apartment in Syracuse, N.Y., has been found dead.

Sgt. Tom Connellan says the incident began around 10 p.m. Sunday when the gunman broke into an apartment and demanded money from three people. He says two of them escaped to a neighboring apartment and called police.

When police arrived, Connellan says officers and the suspect briefly fired shots at each other. Connellan says the two victims and four residents of the apartment were rescued from the building. The other victim was rescued later from the roof.

Police Chief Gary Miguel says a SWAT team entered the building around 4 a.m. Monday and found the gunman's body in a stairwell. Miguel says it wasn't clear if the gunman shot himself or was killed by police.
