A Swiss official says Switzerland has opened its own investigation into the case of a nuclear physicist whom France suspects of Al Qaeda links.

The official says the French suspect, who worked at the world's largest atom smasher on the Swiss-French border and at a Swiss technology institute, is unspecified in Switzerland's investigation.

But federal prosecutor spokeswoman Walburga Bur says it is the same case. She says the investigation is directed at unknown persons on suspicion of supporting a criminal organization. Swiss authorities often use the term "unknown" in investigations when they are very preliminary.

Bur confirmed a report Sunday in the weekly NZZ am Sonntag, but refused to say more about the case.
