One teenager died and a second was critically injured when their car slammed into the side of a school bus in north Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

The Paradise Valley Unified School District bus was hit by the compact car at the intersection of north 12th Street and Union Hills Drive.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Alex Rangel says the bus did not have any students on board and its driver wasn't hurt.

The two male teens in the car were trapped under the weight of the bus. Rangel says they're between 16- and 18-years old.

One teen died at the scene and the second was transported to a local trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

He says a heavy crane is being brought in to lift the bus off the car.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
