NEW YORK – Just how low can the crime rate go?
The New York Police Department says the city is on track to have about 453 homicides this year. That would break a previous record low of 497 set in 2007.
Even with fewer officers and budget cuts, overall crime is down nearly 40 percent from the same time last year.
The city averages about six homicides per 100,000 people. That's among the lowest in the U.S. But there's still room for improvement.
In London, there are about two homicides per 100,000 people. In Tokyo, there's about one.
Commissioner Ray Kelly says the nation's largest police department will continue to work diligently to combat crime. He says even one crime is too many.
