Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says differences remain with the U.S. over the conditions necessary to resume peacemaking with the Palestinians.

Netanyahu said Sunday he hopes to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

He is expected in Cairo later Sunday before meeting with U.S. Mideast envoy George Mitchell.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he won't relaunch negotiations while Israel continues West Bank settlement construction.

Washington, which opposes the construction, hopes to strike a compromise enabling Netanyahu and Abbas to meet next week.
