Hurricane Fred became the second major hurricane of the Atlantic season but remains far out at sea without threatening land.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Fred weakened slightly Wednesday but remained a Category 3 storm. It's projected five-day path will keep it over the open ocean until it loses steam.
Fred's maximum sustained winds were near 115 mph (185 kph). The storm is expected to weaken more in the next two days.
The storm is centered about 595 miles (957 kilometers) west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and moving northwest near 13 mph (21 kph).
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Linda was gaining strength slowly far out over the Pacific with maximum sustained winds near 70 mph (113 kph). Forecasters expect it to become a hurricane soon but it doesn't threaten land.
