BEIJING – State television in western China has reported that 476 people have sought treatment since Aug. 20 after being stabbed with hypodermic needles.
Xinjiang Television says the stabbings were one of the reasons behind a new protest in the western Chinese city of Urumqi two months after deadly ethnic rioting there left nearly 200 dead.
A public notice shown Thursday on Xinjiang Television says 433 of the victims were ethnic Han Chinese, 12 ethnic Uighurs, and 19 Hui — another Muslim minority. The remaining were people from other minority groups.
The official Xinhua News Agency says hundreds of people assembled in several areas of Urumqi to demand security guarantees from authorities after the syringe attacks.
