The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says a grizzly bear killed 13 sheep on a grazing allotment in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

Mark Bruscino, a bear management program supervisor for the department, says the bear killed eight ewes and five lambs Aug. 15. He says grizzlies have killed about 45 sheep and 35 cattle across Wyoming so far this year.

Bruscino says wildlife officials are monitoring the situation, and that the depredation happened in a backcountry area accessible only by horses. There are no plans to kill or relocate the grizzly, in part because of the remote location.

He says the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will reimburse the sheep producer for the losses if a claim is submitted.
