The Penske Automotive Group is planning to pull the Saturn brand out of Canada after its deal to purchase the company from General Motors closes later this year, a GM spokesperson has confirmed.

According to GM, a business case to continue selling Saturn vehicles in the country couldn't be made as the two corporations work to finalize the transfer of ownership of the brand and its dealer network.

The current dealer network of 46 retail outlets was informed of the decision last week. Saturn Canada sold 18,729 cars in 2008.

Under the proposed deal with General Motors, Penske will continue selling several GM-produced models through 2011 as it searches for new manufacturing partners to provide its dealers with vehicles that will be sold under the Saturn name.
