Part of a building under construction in Dubai collapsed Sunday, but there was no indication of widespread casualties, authorities said.

Rescue teams looked through the towering jumble of metal, glass and concrete for any workers or others possibly trapped after a large section of part of the six-story structure buckled in the city's crowded Deira section. Only a small construction crew was on hand when the structure went down, but it not known whether all escaped safely, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.

The cause for the collapse was not immediately known.

Hundreds of construction projects dot Dubai, but major accidents are infrequent. The pace of work in the once-booming Emirates also has been slowed sharply by the global economic crisis.

In March, three workers were killed when part of a warehouse under construction collapsed in high winds in Dubai. In November, a construction crane collapsed onto Dubai's main highway, but caused no injuries.
