The trial for a former University of Alabama at Huntsville professor accused of killing his wife and dumping her body in the Tennessee River is scheduled to begin next month.

The Morgan County Circuit Clerk's office has subpoenaed 50 prosecution witnesses for the Aug. 17 trial of 46-year-old Andrew Pakhomov.

He is charged with strangling Yelena Zakin, tying a bag of rocks around her neck and then dumping her body in the river in June 2006.

The Russian professor, who has since remarried, has pleaded not guilty. He is charged with intentional murder, which means he is not eligible for the death penalty.

He taught physics at the university before his arrest. Zakin was a senior contract administrator for UAH.
