A 93-year-old Illinois man will wed his childhood sweetheart after 85 years apart, UPI reported.
Roland "Mac" McKitrick of Arlington Heights proposed to Lorraine Beatty, 92, on Tuesday. The couple reconnected three years ago after an 85-year break in their friendship.
"She was my third-grade sweetheart back in 1921," McKitrick told UPI. "We knew each other for about one year. Then, for all practical purposes, we lost contact for 85 years."
McKitrick and Beatty reconnected through their brothers who were both living in Connecticut.
McKitrick said he still has a picture of Beatty and himself taken when they were children.
"That snapshot stayed in my memory," he said. "And her face stayed in my memory."
