A United Parcel Service delivery driver is in critical condition after being shot in the back on Chicago's South Side in an apparent robbery attempt.

Chicago police say the unidentified driver had just finished making a delivery in the West Englewood neighborhood when two men approached him and ordered him to drive away in his truck with them inside.

The driver refused and was trying to run away when he was shot.

Fire officials say he's in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in suburban Oak Lawn.

UPS spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg says the driver was aware of his surroundings and could speak after the shooting. She says officials have been in contact with the man's family.

Rosenberg says UPS security officials are working with police.
