Gunfire erupted in New Jersey's largest city, with seven people shot in two separate incidents. Three people have been killed.

Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Paul Loriquet says five people — three men and two women — were shot near Newark's Weequahic Park around 1:30 Monday afternoon.

One of the women, 35-year-old Nakisha Allen of Newark, was pronounced dead.

The others were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions and names were not released.

Another two people were fatally shot hours later less than 4 miles away; the first shooting took place in the shadow of Route 78, and the second occurred not far from Route 280.

No motive or suspects have been named. It's unknown if the incidents are related.

Police say they're searching for a burgundy sedan, which may have fled the scene of the first shooting.
