A fire broke out on the roof of a high-rise apartment building west of downtown Dallas on Wednesday, but no serious injuries were reported.

The fire erupted in an air conditioning unit on the top of the 11-story Indigo apartment tower, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

Firefighters were able to put out the blaze in about an hour, but the building was evacuated of its elderly tenants.

No serious injuries were reported, but some elderly residents were examined as a precaution, officials said.

The building was the scene of a December 2005 fire that killed one resident.
