A brief armed standoff at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka, Kan., ended peacefully Sunday as the unidentified gunman slowly ejected rounds from his weapon in exchange for cigarettes, a local newspaper reported.
The Topeka Capital-Journal said the suspect finally laid the empty gun on the floor and gave himself up at about 1:45 p.m. CDT.
Earlier reports said that a SWAT team and hostage negotiators had been sent to the hospital, and that an ambulance was on standby.
There were no reports of shots fired or injuries.
Former Topeka City Councilwoman Lana Kennedy told The Capital-Journal that her husband, Bob Kennedy, was among those unable to leave the building.
