BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Robert Taylor Jr., former publisher of the Philadelphia Bulletin and a champion of the free press, has died. He was 96.
His son, Robert E. Taylor, says his father died Thursday at his home in Bryn Mawr, outside Philadelphia. No cause was disclosed
Taylor began working at the Bulletin in 1935 after graduating from Princeton University. He then served in the Navy during World War II.
He became Bulletin president in 1959 and was publisher from 1964 to 1975. The paper won two Pulitzers during his tenure.
In 1963, Taylor and the city editor were sentenced to jail for refusing to divulge sources on corruption stories. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned the ruling, citing state law.
