NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police say an escaped inmate from a Mississippi prison has been taken into custody in the shooting of a Nashville police officer during a routine traffic stop.
Police spokesman Don Aaron told The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal that inmate Joseph Jackson was in custody as one of two suspects in the Thursday shooting of Nashville police officer Sgt. Mark Chesnut.
Chesnut was listed in serious condition after surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections says Jackson had been serving a life sentence for armed robbery and aggravated assault at the Delta Correctional Facility.
The department says Jackson escaped Thursday when he went to an optometrist appointment in Greenwood. He is being held at the Davidson Criminal Justice Center in Nashville.
