A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
A quake of that strength can trigger a tsunami, but there were no immediate warnings reported, according to Reuters.
The quake reportedly struck at a relatively shallow depth of 44.7 miles at 12:19 a.m. local time Wednesday, 126 miles southeast of Rabaul on New Britain.
"We have not received any report from our network abroad on the impact of the quake," Ajat Sudrajat, an analyst at the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency in Indonesia, which borders Papua New Guinea, told Reuters.
Initial reports measured the quake at 7.0 strength on the Richter scale.
