A knife-wielding man has been shot and wounded inside a New York City police station after stabbing someone on the street, authorities said.

It started when a man in his 40s was stabbed in Flushing, Queens, police said. It's not clear if he knew his attacker.

When the suspect ran into the police station, officers told him to drop the knife. He lunged at them, and was shot in the chest.

A knife with a 7-inch blade was recovered. It's not known yet how many shots were fired.

Both men are hospitalized in stable condition.
