Authorities and witnesses say a boat driven by teens collided with a larger vessel on a New Jersey river, killing one and leaving four injured.

The crash occurred Friday night near the mouth of the Manasquan Inlet between Point Pleasant Beach and Brielle.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin says the boats were traveling in opposite directions when the smaller boat's driver somehow lost control, leading to the collision. He says it's unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role.

Witnesses say the smaller boat's five occupants appeared to be teens between the ages of 13 and 16.

McLaughlin says two of the teens were hospitalized in critical condition late Friday. Two others were in good condition.

He says the two men aboard the larger boat were not injured.
